Halla is a member of the Order of the Night Guardians; a Guild dedicated to protecting the innocent from monsters like vampires. The Order is composed of mostly Lycans (werewolves) but she and her family are a rarer form of shapeshifter known as Arktos. After obtaining her Guild crest at 19, Halla is tasked with slaying one of the most deadly kinds of quarry; an Elder vampire known as 'Eldarin'. Halla takes her job very seriously, and is excited to take on such a hunt, longing to make a name for herself in the pawprints of her father Arthur Grimbear.
But Eldarin is no run-of-the-mill kind of vampire. As an Elder, he poses an even greater challenge. Ten years pass, with the two of them locked in a stalemate, neither side willing to give up. And yet, strangely, Eldarin doesn't kill her... Stranger still, Halla begins to realise that the reasons the Order usually hunt vampires do not apply to him. Halla begins to question her mission, and her changing feelings towards Eldarin.

Gilnor is one of 'The Crowned'; a Fey by birth who underwent a mysterious process they call 'the change' when he reached puberty, causing him to become vampiric. A danger to all his previous kin - since The Crowned cannot resist the call to kill any Fey near to them - rather than stake him, his family exiled him from the Feywield to the non-magic realm. For 700 years, he has wandered, living out his new existence.
Then the Huntress came. He was not a stranger to being hunted. All previous beings who tried he either killed or frightened away, but this one turned out to be the most persistent. Driven largely by boredom, Gilnor strove to build a 'game' out of her hunt rather than kill her outright.
Ten years pass, and one day he finds his nemesis Mistress Halla at the mercy of one of The Younger vampires. Gilnor's decision that night changes their dynamic forever...
